New world record

16/05/2008 12:59:00 PM
Students at Sir Henry Parkes School jumped into the record books with a new world record on Friday.

Students attempted the world record across Australia at 11.30am. Over 65,000 participated simultaneously beating the previous record by 59,000 jumpers.

The event was held in conjunction with Jump Rope for Heart at the school that raised $2,164.55.

School Principal, Peter Hickey, was impressed by the turnout of students and thought the event was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“It happened to be this year, and was a chance for the students to be part of the record,” Mr Hickey said.

“Research studies show increased levels of obesity in school children. This gets kids active and healthy.”

Mr Hickey said recent research showed that active students were more active learners socially and academically.

“Kids seem to be getting more sedentary,” Mr Hickey said.

But this was not the case on Friday, Mr Hickey explained, with the school children enjoying the opportunity to jump for a world record, and a good cause.

“It’ll be something to pass on to their families down the track,” Mr Hickey said.

“Ten per cent of the money raised goes back to the school for physical education equipment like footballs and soccer balls.”

To ensure that the record was broken, official observers watched the jumpers for the three minutes required to break the record. The observers even got into the spirit of the day and took up skipping ropes joining the jumping students.

“We have witness forms, a video, pictures, consent forms and three to four witnesses,” Mr Hickey said.

The Tenterfield Tournadoes skipping team, some members of which are set to enter the world stage in South Africa later this year, gave the students at the school inspiration for the day by doing a demonstration. The team also gave a demonstration in Uralla as part of the Jump Rope for Heart day activities last week.
